Personal Statement draft

I would like to study Film Production at university as I’ve always had an interest in film and film making and am drawn to learning more about creating engaging camera work, sound, editing and script writing. Watching films is a major hobby of mine and in the last couple of years I’ve developed my interest in cinema and when I watch a film, I am examining things from the perspective of cinematography, the sound quality and the narrative. I enjoy researching into how films are made and try my best to learn from other filmmakers to improve on my own work.

I’m currently studying a Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Film and TV at East Surrey College, where I’ve been able to gain more knowledge about film and media production while working on a wide variety of film projects. I have started to develop my skills in filming, sound and editing. For filming, I own a DSLR camera that can shoot video as well as images and I have always been interested in recording videos and editing them together in my own short films. I have started to use different cameras, such as Go Pro and semi-professional video cameras, in the hope of being able to progress to using professional cameras in the future. Also, I have been able to learn about sound equipment, and I’m starting to develop my skills in sound recording and editing.

I am very interested in editing and developing my knowledge in post-production sound and colour grading. I can use Adobe Premiere Pro, and I have edited a wide variety of films and project work. Through my job coaching class and work experience, I have been able build my professional and employment skills, and had the opportunity to meet with professionals from the media industry and learn more about editing techniques and using sound.

Since starting my college course a few years ago, I have had experience in different crew roles and using a wide range of equipment. In a recent project, I had roles being the Sound Recorder, Boom Operator and Assistant Camera Operator. I also took a leading acting role in my project, and other group projects. In a recent assignment my script idea was selected for production of the TV Pilot project (one of two out of ten submissions). I worked on the production team to plan and produce the script for the short episode. My idea for the TV Pilot was purely based on my fascination on mockumentaries such as The Office and Parks Recreation.

Asides from mockumentaries I also enjoy Action/Adventure movies mainly Marvel films and sometimes horror or thriller such as movies like A Quiet Place (made by Actor/Director John Krasinski) and Get Out by Jordan Peele. These directors were a big inspiration as to why I really fully invested into film production as a whole. Other directors that inspire me are Edgar Wright, Taika Waititi and The Russo Brothers, who I also like for their film making visual and audio styles. With Wright’s ability to combine sound and visuals, he can synchronise the action, camerawork and sound design. I have attempted to use similar techniques in some of my films. Besides being interested in films I also enjoy watching TV shows such as Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. When I am not doing that I usually go out on hikes taking pictures of the view, riding down on a longboard and also currently learning how to play a Ukulele.

My plans for the future in filming is to get into Uni and work my way up as a film maker, gathering up information, knowledge, making connections and then hopefully becoming a Director of Photography. That is my goal to further develop in my camera skills and be able to convey my ideas and vision in film.
